Moon Journals

This week we are going to be starting a moon unit for science!  We are beginning today by talking about what a scientist is and then we will be focusing on the idea of observation as we look at the phases of the moon. Starting tomorrow in their home communication folders the children will be receiving a moon journal.  This is meant for them to look at the moon and color in the part of the circle that they see each night.  It is important for them to put the date on their journal so we can see as a class how it will be changing.  This project will last for approximately one month.  Every week they will be given a new journal to complete so we can track the phases of the moon together.  In class, we will be talking about what we observed from the night before and tracking it as a class.  My job throughout this journey will be to take pictures of the moon each night so we have something to chart in the classroom.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask!

Thanks!

Circle Notebooks

I hope you enjoyed your child's first entry into his/her circle notebook. Hopefully, it was a good opportunity to engage them in conversations about school. Many of you probably are wondering what I am talking about because your child's notebook did not make it home on Friday. As I was leaving on Friday, I noticed some children put their notebooks back in the bin where we keep them rather than in their mailboxes. Consequently, you may be viewing your child's notebook on Monday. No problem...just write back and send it back on Tuesday.
I look forward to seeing you on Thursday night at 6:30 for our Curriculum Night. Bring your questions!

One More Addition to Day 2

First Day of Brown Bag Shares

Dolphin Digest--Week 2

This week, the Dolphins will continue to work on reading short "a" words. The "an", "ap", and "ab" families will be our specific focus in phonics. In math, we will be reviewing number facts to 5 using ten frames and math games. We will be finding our "reading spots" and selecting "just right" books from our classroom libraries during Reader's Workshop.
Please refer to the schedule for your child’s special “Brown Bag Share Day” which was sent home on Friday. Your child should place five items in a bag. These items should help describe them. For example: a cucumber if he/she has a garden, a dog collar if he/she has a dog, a family picture, etc. The project has been modeled in class. Enjoy!
On Friday of this week, we will hold our first all school Morning Meeting as we celebrate "International Dot Day". Mr. Fosher will read "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. Please have your child dress in clothing with dots if possible.

The Dolphin Digest--Week 1

This week promises to be a very busy one in the Dolphin classroom. First, we will be sending home your child’s homework folder today. The folder comes home every Monday and you should find a list of activities for the week to be completed and signed and returned on Friday. The goal of homework is to begin to teach your child study skills and responsibility. For parents, the homework will keep you informed on the math skills and spelling words we will be practicing each week. Of course, every night your child should spend ten minutes practicing reading to you. Along with homework and spelling, we will begin our phonics program, Learning to Read by Reading Phonics. Our concentration will be on “short a” words with a review of consonants…t,s,m,b,f,and hard c. In math, we will continue recording tally marks and practicing numeral writing.
My thanks for your attention and support of our children.

Welcome to the Dolphin Classroom Blog

Dear Dolphin Families,
We have had a wonderful beginning to First Grade!!!  Your child has begun to make the transition back to a school routine and is learning the names of the other children in his/her class. We have been taking things very slowly as they begin to know me and my expectations. We have started to draft our classroom rules, and we will begin a discussion of our "hopes and dreams" for the school year. Snack time is at 10:00AM each day, followed by lunch at 11:35AM, so please send in one item only for a quick snack so lunches will be eaten!! My thanks to you for your immediate attention to all the paperwork sent your way. If those papers have escaped your eyes, please take time to fill them out ASAP.  Thanks for your attention. I look forward to a great year together!
